Following are directions if you'd like to contribute squares for the Throws For Our Troops Project. Servicemen and women who can use some handmade love will be identified by the Military Mama Network. Click here to find out what the Military Mama Network is. What To Do


To make my squares, I used part of the pattern for Red Heart's free pattern, Pumpkin Face Throw (please see specific instructions found below for the squares I made). Any square pattern you choose is fine as long as your finished square measures approximately 9" x 9"

Please use vibrant colors! I'd like to use colors other than camouflage or red/white/blue colors because (a) they're around camo all day long, and (b) I want an unexpected and fun throw sure to put smiles on faces. That said, if you have your heart set on using those types of colors, those squares are absolutely still welcome.

When you make your squares and send them, please identify the yarn manufacturer, and yarn type and color to make it easier for me to match the squares up and/or find any additional yarn I need to finish the throw.

Materials used:

Red Heart Super Saver or other worsted weight yarn
Crochet hook: 5.5 mm [US I-9]

Solid square instructions:


Ch 4, join with slip st in first ch.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc throughout), 11 dc in ring, join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3—12 dc.

Round 2: Ch 3, *[(2 dc, 1 tr) in next dc, (1 tr, 2 dc) in next dc] (corner), dc in next dc, repeat from * twice, (2 dc, 1 tr) in next dc, (1 tr, 2 dc) in next dc, join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3.

Round 3: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, *corner in next 2 tr, dc in next 5 dc, repeat from * twice, corner, dc in next 2 dc, join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3.

Round 4: Ch 3, dc in next 4 dc, *corner in next 2 tr, dc in next 9 dc, repeat from * twice, corner in next 2 tr, dc in next 4 dc, join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3.

Round 5: Ch 3, dc in each dc across to corner tr, *corner in next 2 tr, dc in each dc across to corner tr, repeat from * twice, corner in next 2 tr, dc in each remaining dc across, join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3.

Rounds 6-9: Repeat Round 5. Fasten off at end of last round. Fasten off at end of last round.

Multi-color square instructions:


Rounds 1 & 2: With Color A, repeat rounds 1 and 2 of Solid Square. Fasten off at end of last round.

Rounds 3-5: Join Color B in same st as last round join, repeat rounds 3-5 of Solid Square. Fasten off at end of last round.

Rounds 6 & 7: Join Color C in same st as last round join, repeat round 5 of Solid Square. Fasten off at end of last round.

Rounds 8 & 9: Join Color D in same st as last round join, repeat round 5 of Solid Square. Fasten off at end of last round.
